My Bollywood Bride
Alex Kincade (Jason Lewis), a magazine writer, meets Reena (Kashmira Shah) while she vacations in Venice, California. Their short fling inspires him later on to try to find her in Mumbai. It turns out she's a major movie star engaged to be married to a self-important producer, Shekhar Singh (Gulshan Grover). Alex's amiable rickshaw driver, Priyad (Ash Chandler), sneaks him into Bollywood Studios where Reena Khanna is acting in her latest film, produced by Shekhar.
Shekhar likes to threaten people with the promise of making them vanish, "Like that!" His finger snap adds flair which covers the fact that he feels the need to have bodyguards around him at all times. A tough-talker, he meets his match in a determined rival, Alex.
Alex and Reena get reacquainted, he meets her parents. They like him, but the influence and heft of Shekhar Singh's reputation and position in Bollywood can't be ignored. Will Reena follow her heart? Clearly, she's into Alex, not into the producer but she doesn't want to disobey her parents. Shekhar, it turns out, makes videos of himself screwing women. One stolen disc ends up with Reena's costar, Bobby K. (Sanjay Suri), Alex's host and new friend in Mumbai. A subplot dealing with the meaning of true love features Bobby and an ex-girlfriend, Alisha (Neha Dubey), choreographer of the dance sequences in Shekhar's production.
Reena sees video of her fiancé engaged in some apparently unusual sex act with another woman. Her parents have in any case come around to wishing only love and happiness for their daughter. A dash to the airport to intercept a conveniently slow-walking Alex is intercut with movie premiere moments, the new star, Alisha, performing outside the theater with her reconciled lover, Bobby K.
Everything is fine. Even the asshole, Shekhar Singh, gets himself a new star, the pretty choreographer, Alisha.
Musical numbers, colorful costumes, zippy camerawork and editing, the Mumbai metropolis, Venice Beach, romance, pathos, gorgeous Indian Ocean vistas and the colorful sunset skies above, abound in this film. Ash Chandler as the rickshaw driver who seems to have only one customer is funny, as is Sanjay Suri as Bobby. Neha Dubey, retired now from acting, is adorable as the choreographer. Jason Lewis, recognizable to American audiences from Sex and the City and Charmed, does a good enough job as the handsome male lead. Kashmira Shah in the lead female role is ravishing in a pleasant little movie with the message: follow your heart. It's not profound.
On Amazon Prime the film's title is My Faraway Bride, but My Bollywood Bride, the original title, is more accurate. It dates from 2006.
